DIY – Simple + Natural Insect Repellent
Nothing kills our summer Sangria buzz like swarms of annoying mosquitoes leaving a trail of bites on our arms and legs. A lot of repellents available have harsh chemicals like DEET. Our skin, our largest organ, is a gateway to the inside of the body and we find ourselves thinking, “Why would we expose our bodies to such toxic chemicals when natural alternatives abound?” Here is one DIY natural solution for repelling mosquitoes and other insects.
Combine 5 – 10 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil for every 1 -2 oz. of grapeseed oil (carrier oil).
Studies have shown that Lemon Eucalyptus is the most effective essential oil to use in natural repellents but you could also try Citronella Essential Oil or Peppermint Essential Oil. There are also other carrier or blending oils you can use like olive or hazelnut oils.
Please note: It is extremely important to handle the essential oils carefully because they are very potent and could cause skin irritation if too much is used. Do not apply essential oil directly to skin. Always test a small amount of the mixed solution on your skin and wait 24 hours before using in larger amounts. This is recipe is not to take the place of anything prescribed or recommended by your personal doctor.
We recommend buying at Chico Natural Foods locally or from Mountain Rose Herbs online.
